Quick answer
To use an H-shifter in ETS2, select an H-shifter transmission mode, bind each gear position, bind range and splitter if your gearbox needs them, then test with an empty or light trailer. If reverse or high gears do not work, check the shifter layout and range or splitter bindings before editing advanced files.
An H-shifter makes ETS2 feel more physical, but it also adds setup steps. Most problems come from choosing the wrong transmission mode, missing range or splitter bindings, or expecting a car-style 6-speed shifter to cover a truck gearbox by itself.

Pick The Right Mode
In controls, choose a transmission mode that matches how you want to drive:
| Mode | Best for |
|---|---|
| Real automatic | Beginners and casual driving |
| Sequential | Paddle shifters, keyboard shifting, simple manual feel |
| H-shifter | Physical gear lever with range or splitter options |
If you only want manual control without physical gear positions, use sequential first.
Bind The Gear Positions
Open the ETS2 controls menu and bind the shifter positions one by one. Move the lever into each gear position when prompted.
After binding:
- Check neutral.
- Check reverse.
- Check first gear.
- Check whether higher gears require range or splitter.
- Test without traffic before starting a real job.
Range And Splitter
Truck gearboxes often need range or splitter controls to reach more gears than your physical shifter has positions. Put those controls on easy buttons on the wheel or shifter.
If gears 7 to 12 do not work, this is often the reason.
SCS has advanced input documentation for players who need deeper setup: SCS Advanced Input Configuration. Most beginners should exhaust in-game bindings first.
Reverse Gear Problems
If reverse does not work:
- Rebind the reverse position.
- Check whether your shifter uses a push-down reverse gate.
- Confirm the selected gearbox layout.
- Test in a flat service area.
- Avoid editing control files until the basic wizard is clean.
Beginner Practice
Start with a light trailer and a simple route. Learn to:
- Pull away smoothly.
- Downshift before hills.
- Stop without stalling.
- Reverse slowly.
- Use range or splitter without looking down constantly.
An H-shifter is worth it when it improves control. If it makes every delivery stressful, use real automatic while you learn the map and parking.
