Quick answer

If your controller is not working in ETS2, confirm Windows or your platform sees the device, check Steam Input settings, open the ETS2 Controls menu, and assign or reset the controller profile. Test steering, throttle, brake, camera, and menu navigation separately. If one gamepad works elsewhere but not in ETS2, the issue is usually detection, Steam Input, or a bad control binding.

A controller can fail in ETS2 for several different reasons: the device is not detected, Steam Input is changing it, the in-game control profile is wrong, or a binding is missing. Fix it in layers instead of remapping everything at once.

For a normal setup after the device works, read ETS2 Controller Settings.

Test one input at a time: steering, throttle, brake, camera, menu, then buttons.

Start Outside ETS2

Before changing the game, confirm the device works:

  1. Reconnect the controller.
  2. Try a different USB port or cable if wired.
  3. Confirm the controller works in the operating system or another game.
  4. Restart Steam.
  5. Launch ETS2 after the controller is connected.

If the controller is not detected outside ETS2, the game settings are not the first problem.

Check Steam Input

Steam Input can help some controllers and confuse others. If ETS2 sees the wrong device type, buttons act strange, or inputs duplicate, check the Steam controller settings for the game.

Use one clear test:

SymptomCheck
Controller not detectedSteam Input and OS device detection
Buttons wrongSteam layout or ETS2 bindings
Steering too sharpController steering sensitivity
Brake or throttle stuckAxis assignment and deadzones
Camera moves by itselfStick drift or camera binding

Reset or Rebuild In-Game Controls

Open the ETS2 Controls menu and confirm the selected input type. If the profile is messy, reset to a known layout, then bind only the essentials:

  • Steering.
  • Throttle.
  • Brake.
  • Look left/right.
  • Indicators.
  • Lights.
  • Wipers.
  • Route Advisor controls.
  • Parking brake.

Do not test only steering. A usable controller layout needs driving, camera, and utility controls.

Common Mistakes

  • Connecting the controller after the game already launched.
  • Changing Steam Input and ETS2 bindings at the same time.
  • Forgetting deadzones for old sticks.
  • Binding throttle and brake to the same axis incorrectly.
  • Copying wheel settings to a gamepad.

If Nothing Works

Create a spare ETS2 profile and test a clean control setup. If that works, your main profile control settings are the issue. If it does not, focus on Steam Input, device drivers, USB/Bluetooth stability, or the controller itself.

Next, tune the working layout with Best ETS2 Settings.
