Euro Truck Simulator 2 cabin and Route Advisor view affected by configuration settings

Quick answer

Before editing ETS2 config.cfg, close the game, back up the file, change one setting, and test. If the game behaves badly, restore the backup or rename config.cfg so ETS2 can recreate it. Do not paste random performance or economy tweaks into a main profile.

config.cfg is one of the most searched ETS2 files because players see it mentioned in performance, console, control, and troubleshooting posts. It can help, but careless edits can also make problems harder to diagnose.

Config edits should be small, reversible, and tested.

Use in-game settings first, then keep config.cfg edits small and reversible.

Where config.cfg Usually Is

On Windows, start here:

Documents\Euro Truck Simulator 2\config.cfg

If you cannot find it, read Where Are ETS2 Profiles, Saves, Mods, and Logs Stored?.

Safe Editing Rules

  1. Close the game.
  2. Make a backup copy.
  3. Change one line.
  4. Save.
  5. Launch and test.
  6. Write down what changed.

If the change does not help, restore the previous value.

When To Reset config.cfg

Resetting can help when:

  1. The game will not launch after settings changes.
  2. Display settings are broken.
  3. Input or graphics behavior became confusing.
  4. You inherited old tweaks from years ago.

Rename config.cfg to something like config-backup.cfg while the game is closed. ETS2 can recreate a fresh file on launch. Keep the old file until you confirm the new setup works.

Avoid Copy-Paste Tweaks

Be careful with forum or video tweaks that claim dramatic FPS, money, or hidden-feature gains. Many are outdated, hardware-specific, or meant for debugging.

For performance, use in-game settings first: ETS2 Low-End PC Settings.

Profile Controls Are Separate

Some control bindings live inside profile files such as controls.sii, not only in config.cfg. If you are fixing wheel or controller problems, back up the whole profile folder before editing.

Config files are useful tools. Treat them like tools, not magic shortcuts.
